What do you already own that someone else may only need occasionally?

Best Things to Rent Out for Extra Money

List tools, gear and equipment you already own. Someone nearby may only need them for a project, a party, a season or a trip.

Ideas for things you may already own

Examples of what can be listed for a short need. These are ideas, not items currently available, and not a ranking of what earns the most.

  1. Tools and DIY

A neighbor may need a tool for one repair or one project, then hand it back. Between those jobs, it stays with you.

For example: Drills, Saws, Step ladders

  2. Lawn and garden

Mowers, pressure washers and blowers often sit unused outside a season. Someone else may need one for a weekend of yard work.

For example: Lawn mowers, Pressure washers, Leaf blowers

  3. Events and parties

Tables, shelter and lighting are often needed for a single gathering, not every week.

For example: Tables, Pop-up canopies, Event lighting

  4. Camping and outdoors

Tents and water gear are typical of a trip, then stored until the next one.

    For example: Tents, Kayaks, Paddleboards

  5. Cameras and audio

A camera, a tripod or a speaker can cover a shoot or a party without the renter buying one.

    For example: Cameras, Tripods, Speakers

What makes an item good to rent out?

Practical checks before you list. They are not a promise that someone will rent it.

  1. You already own it

You own the item, or you have the rights and permissions required to list it.

  2. Someone else may only need it for a while

A project, an event, a season, a move or a trip is the kind of use renting is built for.

  3. It can be used again

Listed items are non-consumable and suitable for repeated use.

  4. You can store it between uses

It already has a place at home when it is not out on a rental.

  5. You can keep it ready

It should be safe, clean, functional and accurately described, including any limits.

  6. You can choose when it goes out

Your calendar, your pause switch and each accept or decline stay with you.

If you use an item yourself most of the time, listing it may not be a good fit. Occasional use on your side is a more natural match.

How to start

From an item you own to a request you can accept or decline.

  1. List what you own

Add photos, a daily price and the dates it is available. Creating a listing is free.

  2. It is reviewed first

A new listing is reviewed before it appears, and it stays unpublished until lender verification is complete.

  3. You accept or decline

Renters send a request. They pay through Super Neighbor only after you accept.

Listing is free. A 10% lender fee applies when a rental is confirmed. How lending on Super Neighbor works.

You set the terms

Price, dates and handover stay on the listing you publish.

  • Your price

Set a daily price of at least CAD $1. You can also add a lower daily rate for 3+ days and for 7+ days. Those rates cannot be higher than the base daily price.

  • Your calendar

Block dates when the item is not available, and pause the listing when you do not want new requests.

  • Pickup or delivery

Choose pickup only, pickup or delivery, or delivery only. Super Neighbor does not deliver the item. If a renter asks for delivery, agree the fee in chat before you accept.

  • A security hold you choose

Set a security hold on the listing, between CAD $100 and CAD $400. It is a temporary authorization on the renter's card before handover, not a charge and not part of your earnings. It is released if the item is returned as agreed.

What is in place around a rental

What already happens from the request to the return.

  • Renters verify before they request

A renter verifies their identity and phone number before they can send a rental request.

  • Payment goes through the platform

After you approve a request, the renter pays through Super Neighbor. Payments are processed by a third-party payment provider.

  • Handover and return are confirmed

Renter and lender confirm the handover and the return in the app, and tools are available to report an issue.

  • Listings are reviewed first

New listings are reviewed by Super Neighbor before they appear in the marketplace.
